GAFCO is a leading company in Tuna canning, wheat milling; feed milling and fishmeal production; agro feeds and veterinary drugs in Ghana. Industrie-Bau Nord AG (IBN), the mother company of GAFCO, conceived a new design for integrated agricultural processing complexes in developing countries in the late 1950's. This was later illustrated in the engineering designs and feasibility studies prepared for a 'Tema Food Complex' in Ghana in 1962. And as per the plans, it was a necessity for the Complex to house a wheat mill, an oil mill, a cocoa plantation and an animal feed within its borders.

The former Tema Food Complex was intended to play an important role in the provision of basic food products to the citizens of Ghana, but the IBN was able to gain control over the former Tema Food Complex when the government initiated a privatisation programme as part of a free market-based economic reform package.

Later on, in January 1995, an extensive rehabilitation programme was immediately started. Not only did the IBN submit the highest bid, but their bid was accepted because of their reasons.

GAFCO's history is reflected in the brand name and the symbol found on all GAFCO's products, which unsurprisingly is the Sankofa Bird. The bird is rendered as twisting its beak behind itself, in order to bring forth an egg from its back. GAFCO uses this symbol to signify "going back to the past to bring forward that which is useful."
